In a Manner of Speaking (Kindle Store)

In a Manner of Speaking: A Collection of Monologues and One-man/One-Woman Shows for Actors (excerpt):

I’m the proud owner of more than a few regrets, so this might be your “there but for the grace of God go I” moment. Make of it what you will.

I’m going to tell you right now what your biggest problem in this life will be. You won’t believe me, of course, but that’s OK. Hear me now and believe me later.

Your biggest problem, which will last you until the end of your days, is you’re not going to be able to tell anyone what you do or what you’ve done. It goes without saying this includes personal contacts and intimate relations. What you may not realize is it also includes those who will come along on the job and you’ll think that because of their status they’re entitled to know; they’re in on the secret.

It might just be that they have the sort of clearance that entitles them to know but be advised that if they don’t already know, you don’t want them to hear it from you.

Know that your best friend in the world and the people with whom you work and on whom you rely should be treated as mortal enemies because what they know about you has the potential to do you in, to betray you even though they may have participated in the activity; they may even have ordered the activity.

In either case they have something they can use to spare their own lives at the expense of yours. You need to keep this in mind. It is your new sacred truth. Dismiss it, ignore it, forget it at your peril.

Available now in the Amazon Kindle Store.
